White House: Trump, May will 'not allow' Syria chemical attacks to continue

President Trump speaks during a Cabinet meeting where he said he would offer a response to a Syrian chemical weapons attack soon

When asked whether Britain would join the United States if Washington decided on further military action in Syria, May on Tuesday declined to answer the question directly but said: "We believe that those responsible should be held to account".

"We can't let that happen".

However, inspectors with the global chemical weapons watchdog will travel to Douma to investigate reports of a chemical attack.

The European Aviation Security Agency's (EASA) warning of possible launches of air-to-ground strikes or cruise missiles comes as the US, Britain, France and allies weigh up retaliatory measures to a suspected chemical weapon attack in Syria.

"The U.S. ordering a military strike against another country is pretty serious business", Singh said.

May had earlier agreed the same thing in a call with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump is also scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe following the summit at his private Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, in a discussion the White House said would focus on trade and investment issues as well as Trump's upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "And if he does it's going to be very tough, very tough".

The president's new national security adviser, John Bolton, urged Trump to skip the trip, an official said.

The attack in Douma occurred late on Saturday amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce with the Army of Islam rebel group. "Sadly, these actions are consistent with Assad's established pattern of chemical weapons use".

That panel had found that the Syrian air force had dropped sarin on the village of Khan Sheikhun in April of past year.

The stakes are higher for any new US military action, with Trump explicitly mentioning Iran and Russian Federation in connection with the weekend attack.

Syria became a member in 2013 as part of a deal brokered by the USA and Russian Federation after a chemical attack in eastern Ghouta killed hundreds of people.

Syrian opposition activists and paramedics said at least 40 people were killed in last weekend's suspected chemical attack and blamed the government.

The U.S. draft had the overwhelming support of the council with 12 members of the 15-member council voting in favor, and only two - Russian Federation and Bolivia - voting against.

The OPCW did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Moscow has previously insisted there was no evidence for a chemical attack.

Instead, they have in recent investigations gathered blood samples from victims and interviewed witnesses outside Syria.

On Tuesday, rival draft resolutions by the U.S. and Russian Federation to set up a new expert body to probe chemical weapons attacks in Syria both failed to pass at the United Nations Security Council.

Amid the tough talk from the White House, the USA military appeared to be in position to carry out any attack order.

More than 100 buses entered Douma on Monday to take the fighters and their families to Jarablus, which is under the shared control of Turkish troops and allied Syrian forces, Syrian state-affiliated al-Ikhbariya TV said.
