Woolworths shuts doors across the country due to IT outage

Supermarket giant Woolworths has suffered an IT outage this afternoon which affected registers at its stores nationwide.

Pictures taken from stores in Sydney and Melbourne show customers waiting at registers with trolleys full of food and groups of abandoned carts.

ZDNet understands the glitch didn't make its way to all stores, however, with some operating as usual.

"The registers are now back online at all our stores", Woolworths tweeted just after 4.52pm. "Thanks", the reply to many reads.

At around 4pm yesterday registers at Woolies stores unexpectedly shut down due to a "system fault" - the fault lasted around 30 minutes.

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer wrote on Twitter. "We were all offered a box of chocolates".

A technical issue has forced Woolworths shops across Australia to close.
