An Amazon Echo Recorded A Conversation, Then Sent It As A Message

Amazon can’t explain why Alexa recorded and shared a private conversation

A spokesperson for Amazon has been in touch with more details on what happened during the Alexa Echo blunder, at least from their point of view.

"At first, my husband was, like, 'no you didn't!' And the (recipient of the message) said 'You sat there talking about hardwood floors, '" Danielle told the station.

"Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like "Alexa".

According to a report by KIRO 7, the Portland family received a phone call from their Seattle contact two weeks ago telling them that their conversations were being recorded and sent to him, and that they should unplug their Echo devices immediately.

"I felt invaded! Like total privacy invasion".

Now her family has unplugged all the devices, and although Amazon offered to "de-provision" the devices of their communications features so they could keep using them to control their home, Danielle and her family reportedly want a refund instead. An engineer tasked with checking her activity logs confirmed her account of events and repeatedly apologized for the mishap. However, Danielle and her husband were not given any specifics on what caused the Alexa issue in the first place. Amazon says this is extremely rare. Alexa then asked out loud, '[contact name], right?'

Amazon said in a statement to The Post Thursday afternoon that the Echo woke up when it heard a word that sounded like "Alexa".

The employee said that Alexa, Amazon's popular voice assistant, had recorded the family's conversation and sent it to him.

Ryan Calo, an associate law professor at the University of Washington, said the incident was alarming since a private conversation had been recorded and sent to a third party. Previously Alexa and Echo speakers were in the news for laughing randomly, even when no particular command was given. Back in March this year, Alexa was in news after it made random creepy laughs.

Amazon has an explanation as to what happened. The company said that the digital assistant thought that the couple said the hotword Alexa, which then activated the assistant.

But with the latest case of Alexa recording and then sending a private conversation without user's knowledge, questions will be raised around what triggered this.
