Apple's California Self-Driving Car Test Fleet Continues to Grow

Apple Self Driving Lexus

That's up from 45 cars in March, and 27 in January.

With 55 self-driving cars and 83 drivers, Apple now has the second highest number of self-driving cars in the U.S. state of California where autonomous vehicles are being tested.

Behind Apple is Alphabet's Waymo which now has 51 self-driving vehicles and Elon Musk-owned Tesla which has 39 cars.

British amateur rugby player dies on Clem's Pirates tour of Sri Lanka
England rugby player Tamara Taylor was among those offering their sympathies on social media. A team mate is said by police to be in a "very" critical condition.

Apple has more self-driving cars in California than Tesla, Waymo, Uber, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The next step, of course, is to test these sensor-equipped vehicles without drivers. Apple lags only behind GM Cruise, which has 104 test vehicles on the road. In addition to California, Waymo tests its cars on public roads in Arizona, Michigan, and Georgia. The company hasn't been allowed to test self-driving cars without a human safety driver behind the wheel just yet. Waymo, for example, used to have over 100 self-driving cars in the state before moving part of its fleet to Arizona and MI, where additional testing is now taking place. MacReports first reported some of the new details of Apple's fleet.

Like other tech giants, Apple is keen to get into the auto space, with Tim Cook past year saying that autonomous systems are "a core technology" that the company views as "very important".

The company's fleet is now made up of Lexus RX450h SUVs, each outfitted with Apple's proprietary technology.
