Coli update: You can now safely eat romaine again

On Wednesday, May 15, 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it's unlikely that anyone now has edible romaine lettuce that's contaminated with the toxic strain of E. coli bacteria sickening people nationwide since March. That was the message Wednesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and if not exactly a thundering signal of "all clear", it's pretty close. That means the contaminated lettuce is now past its 21-day shelf life.

The last shipments of romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region were harvested on April 16, and the harvest season is over, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. The leafy greens industry has shifted to California over the past two months. The state health lab confirmed the link to the Yuma region, Rooney said.

The most recent cases reported by the CDC started May 2, part of the 23 new cases across the nation in the last week, bringing the total to 172.

Health officials say there is a lag time of two to three weeks between when someone falls ill and when it's reported to the CDC.

Since product labels often come without the identification of the growing region, we suggest you pass on romaine lettuce if you are uncertain about where it was grown.

"CDC is updating its advice to consumers". Of 157 people with information available, 75 have been hospitalized, including 20 people who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, which is a type of kidney failure. The outbreak has killed one person and sickened almost 150 others.
