The armed man, who's since been identified 21-year-old Elivelton Neves Moreira, then fires two shots, one into the ground and the other misfiring and jamming in the chamber before his gun is kicked away from him and he's turned onto his front. Moreira was wounded and a short time later died in hospital.

Sao Paulo Governor Marcio Franca visited Sastre at her police station and praised the officer for her heroic actions. "She immobilizes the boy and calls the [emergency services]". As the New York Post noted, the incident took place outside a school in Brazil, where a group of mothers were gathered with their young children for a Mother's Day celebration.

"I just thought about defending the mums, the children, my own life and my daughters", Sastre said. "Her courage and precision saved mothers and children, yesterday at the door of a school", Franca wrote on Twitter. According to public security specialists, the decoration of Officer Sastre may send a misleading message to both the police force and to society. The governor of São Paulo Márcio França described the mother-of-two as "very brave" and her reaction to the gunman as "technically perfect" in a video uploaded on Facebook.
