Forecast: Alberto leaves clouds, rain in its wake for Tampa Bay

Rainfall from Alberto will be heaviest in Florida Alabama and Georgia

The moisture pouring northward coincides with Subtropical Storm Alberto, which approached the Florida Panhandle from the Gulf on Monday morning with sustained winds of up to 65 miles per hour.

Subtropical Storm Alberto continues to influence our forecast as it moves into the north Florida coastline.

Alberto's projected storm track has shifted eastward since Friday, lessening its threat to the active oil production areas in the Gulf of Mexico.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend and tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

After that, it will bring powerful winds and heavy rains as it moves into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hurricane center said.

Washington also is engaged in a sprawling trade dispute with China over US complaints about market access and technology policy. Ahead of the talks, the United States needs Beijing, North Korea's chief economic backer, to maintain pressure on Pyongyang.

The Hurricane Center said the storm would continue moving north to north-northwest and cross the Florida Panhandle coast sometime Monday afternoon or evening.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued the declaration for all 67 counties in his state.

Heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will likely reach the northern Gulf Coast well before the arrival of the center of Alberto.

Storm Alberto isn't classified as tropical storm because its strongest winds are found farther from its centre and it is cooler in temperature. It's moving north at 14 miles per hour (22 kph), and has top sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph). In southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle, the storm could bring more than 8 inches of rain. A storm surge watch has been discontinued west of the Florida/Alabama border.

Alberto is expected to drop 4 to 6 inches of rain along the Gulf Coast, with some places getting as much as a foot. "Flooding and flash flooding are possible in the Southeast United States, including Florida", it said.

Flooding was possible in Florida's Miami-Dade and Monroe counties after weeks of rain, with tornadoes possible Saturday and Sunday and rip currents expected on both coasts, forecasters said.
