Harry Reid receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer

Former U.S. Senator Harry Reid speaks during the National Clean Energy Summit 9.0 on Oct. 13 2017 in Las Vegas

According to a statement from Reid's family, the problem was detected early and the surgery went well.

Former Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) underwent surgery Monday to remove a tumor from his pancreas, Reid's family said in a statement Monday. They say doctors caught the tumor early during a routine screening and his prognosis is good.

Neymar makes Brazil World Cup squad
The only one of those 15 not in Monday's final squad was Dani Alves , who has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee ligament injury.

Reid served 30 years in the U.S. Senate and is widely regarded as the most powerful elected official in Nevada history. Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, at home in Arizona where he himself is battling brain cancer, weighed in to send his prayers and best wishes to his former Senate colleague from across the aisle.

Reid, 78, is now co-chair of the MGM Resorts International Public Policy Institute, along with former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Reid, a Democrat and former Senate majority leader, sponsored or signed onto more than 500 pieces of legislation that later became law and helped choke off funding for a proposed nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain. The Senator opted against running for re-election in 2015; that same year he suffered from a brutal accident that left him blind in one eye. "We are all praying for dear Harry's speedy recovery", he tweeted.
