Head of Britain's MI5 accuses Russian Federation of "criminal thuggery"

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied all involvement in the Skripal poisoning case but MI5 chief Andrew Parker is set to publicly blame him

Addressing a meeting of European security chiefs in Berlin, director general Andrew Parker will stress the importance of cooperation between European intelligence agencies, the BBC reports.

The need "to shine a light through the fog of lies, half-truths and obfuscation that pours out of their propaganda machine" will be set out in his remarks, the first ever made outside Britain by a serving head of MI5.

Russian Federation is committing "flagrant breaches of worldwide rules", the head of Britain's security service claimed May 14 in which he will also stress the importance of post-Brexit security ties.

Mr Parker said the Kremlin was taking part in "deliberate, targeted, malign activity meant to undermine our free, open and democratic societies".

And in a nod to Brexit, he said co-operation with European Union partners was essential to guard against the threats from Islamist militants and Russian Federation.

Parker also condemned what he called a disinformation campaign mounted by Russian Federation following the attack.

"Instead of becoming a respected great nation it risks becoming a more isolated pariah", Parker said.

Skripal, 66, remains in hospital following the attack in the Wiltshire city on March 4.

Counter-terrorism police have not yet identified a suspect in the attempted murder of the Skripals, who fell victim to a nerve agent poisoning from the Novichok family of substances.

Moscow denied any involvement in the first known use of an offensive nerve agent on European soil since World War Two, though the attack sparked the biggest Western expulsion of Russian diplomats since the height of the Cold War.

Russian officials suggested the United Kingdom had carried out the attack to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

Hans-Georg Maassen, head of Germany's BfV domestic intelligence agency, said Moscow was behind a series of cyber attacks carried out by a Russian hacking group called APT28.

In December last year, Parker had revealed that nine terrorist attacks had been prevented by the UK's security services and police since 52-year-old Khalid Masood drove a auto into pedestrians before launching a knife attack after crashing into the side of the Parliament, killing five people on March 22 last year.

"Bare-faced lying seems to be the default mode, coupled with ridicule of critics", he said.
