USA wants to work with Europeans on new Iran deal: Pompeo

Iranians burn a US flag during a protest against President Donald Trump's decision to walk out of a 2015 nuclear deal in Tehran Iran May 11

"It would not stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. But not anymore!" Trump tweeted.

Just three days after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal the United States has begun to make good on Donald Trump's promise to increase sanctions against Tehran.

Part of the flaw with the Iran deal that President Donald Trump rejected was it enticed Europe and the USA into economic relations with Iran that would work against holding the country accountable for violations of the agreement, Bolton said.

Iran has promised to maintain the deal, regardless of Trump's withdrawal, as long as it still has the support of France and the UK.

President Donald Trump's announcement last Tuesday that the USA was exiting the 2015 nuclear accord was met with widespread dismay in Europe where companies now face the threat of sanctions if they do business with Iran.

But Bolton didn't rule out sanctions for European companies doing business with Iran.

USA treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin said: "The Iranian regime and its central bank have abused access to entities in the UAE to acquire United States dollars to fund the IRGC-QF's malign activities, including to fund and arm its regional proxy groups, by concealing the objective for which the U.S. dollars were acquired".

"[New Zealand companies] will lose in this sanction, we can buy, for example butter, from many other countries, that is why it is not in favour of New Zealand, it will not serve the New Zealand companies' interests". Iran's Foreign Minister Zarif failed to win any concrete assurances to help tackle the USA threat of economic sanctions during talks in Beijing Sunday.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said while the Iran deal was "a flawed agreement" because of a lack of unfettered inspections and other problems, leaving the deal isolates the USA, and Trump should have extended it for at least another six months to work with allies.

In an interview with ZDF public television, Altmaier noted that the United States has set a 90-day deadline for foreign firms to comply with the return of sanctions and that this period can be used to convince Washington to change course.

"The policy of the administration is to make sure that Iran never gets close to deliverable nuclear weapons", he added.

Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron reached out to Iran last week to urge it stick to its commitments under the accord.

It added, however, that it considered the encryption standards themselves to be safe if correctly implemented and configured. Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) admitted that the findings constituted "a serious security breach".

As a private citizen, Bolton suggested in the past that the United States push for a change in Iran's government.

In the CNN interview, Bolton did not respond directly when asked whether Trump might seek "regime change" in Iran, or whether the USA military would be ordered to make a preemptive strike against any Iranian nuclear facility.

"I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interest, ultimately, to come along with us".

National security adviser John Bolton with President Trump during an April cabinet meeting at the White House.

Bolton said Europe was still digesting Trump's move last week.

"I think at the moment there's some feeling in Europe - they're really surprised we got out of it, really surprised at the reimposition of strict sanctions".
