WhatsApp Gets New Group Features, Including Descriptions, Mentions, and Admin Controls

Starting today for both iOS and Android users, WhatsApp group chat changes will be rolled out that allow users to include a description to detail the goal, guidelines, or topics for the group.

WhatsApp on Tuesday announced new features for groups, and said they are now rolling out to both Android and iPhone users with the latest versions of the stable apps. All the new features will be applicable to new and existing groups. The group description will appear on top of the chat sitting just below the group name.

Ahead of elections in India this week, tens of thousands of WhatsApp groups have been made in an effort to reach voters, but many groups have been spreading misinformation and division between groups - especially Hindus and Muslims. Now, WhatsApp has further improved the feature with a set of new tools including Group description, Admin controls, Group catch up, Participant search, and more. Some of these functions include changing the group subject, icon and description.

"Groups have been an important part of the WhatsApp experience, whether it's family members connecting across the globe or childhood friends staying in touch over the years", the announcement blog post reads.

WhatsApp users can now also use the new mentions feature in groups. To check new features, however, you have to make sure that running the latest updated app. Also called "group catch up", the feature lets users find those messages in which they have been mentioned, or those messages that reply to them.

In addition to these features, admins now also have the option to remove admin permissions of other group participants, whereas group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started. WhatsApp is also adding a participant search tool, which makes finding individuals easier. That information can now be found by searching for participants on the group info page.
