Americans are thanking Canada to show their support for Trudeau

Was Trudeau wearing fake eyebrows at the G7 summit

In a rare apology by a Trump administration official, top White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Tuesday walked back his inflammatory statement that there was a "special place in hell" reserved for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Navarro condemned Trudeau following the Canadian leader's news conference after his summit meeting with Trump and other world leaders from the Group of Seven.

Trump quickly fired back on Twitter, calling Trudeau's comments "very dishonest and weak".

He asserted, with no evidence, that Trudeau only dared to say Canada wouldn't be pushed around because he didn't think Trump, who was on board Air Force 1 en route to Singapore, would see him.

"I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", he said.

In the same set of tweets, Trump said: "Justin acts hurt when called out!"

Kim Jong Un Takes Selfie During Night Out in Singapore
North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has taken time out of his busy schedule to pose for a selfie with Singapore dignitaries. Mr Lee has said the summit would cost Singapore about S$20 million ($A19 million), more than half of which would go on security.

A day before, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow had also lashed out at Trudeau.

Michael Byers, a professor of worldwide politics at the University of British Columbia, said that despite the current turbulence, the US-Canada relationship "transcends any president or prime minister".

"I had a good relationship with Justin Trudeau, I really did".

Trump spoke just days ahead of a deadline he set last month about his administration's imposition of a 25 per cent punitive tariff on US$50 billion worth of annual imports from China, part of an effort to force Beijing to lower restrictions on U.S. companies and exporters to the country's markets.

The Trump administration's justification for tariffs on national security grounds "is, frankly, absurd", Freeland said, speaking at the US Capitol after a meeting with senators.

Trudeau said that if Trump insisted on slapping steep tariffs on imported Canadian steel and aluminum, Canada would respond with retaliatory tariffs on United States imports.

While uncertainty about the future of the trade deal remains, the Bank of México said the value of the peso against the United States dollar is one of the variables that will suffer the most.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump said in Singapore. "He'll learn, he can't do that", Mr Trump said. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

"I want to correct a mistake I made last Sunday", he said.

For one thing, Mr. Trump told the world that the US and Canada were very close to agreement on a sunset clause - which, if true, would have been an embarrassing climb-down for Mr. Trudeau.

Trump, who had criticised Trudeau after the G7 meeting in Canada on the weekend, said the United States had a big trade deficit with Canada, and "a little balance" was needed. You know they put out a document, I don't know if you saw it.
