Audi CEO arrested over cheating probe

The dramatic development comes a week after Munich prosecutors raided Stadler's home after charging him with fraud and the falsification of documents that allowed diesel vehicles equipped with cheating software to be sold to European customers.

A spokesman for Volkswagen, which owns Audi, confirmed he had been arrested on Monday.

"The presumption of innocence remains in place for Mr. Stadler", Audi said.

This move came as retaliation to Washington's move to impose higher duties on Indian steel and aluminium exports. In retaliation, the Asian nation's Ministry of Commerce has said an equal tariff on U.S. goods would be imposed.

Audi has also been embroiled in the emissions scandal that has plagued Volkswagen.

German carmaker Audi's CEO, Rupert Stadler, has been arrested.

Stadler was accused of fraud and false advertising by German prosecuters last week.

The Audi probe: Audi has been accused of having sold at least 210,000 diesel-engine cars fitted with cheat software in the USA and Europe, starting in 2009. The same goes for Munich prosecutors and Stadler.
