China 'disappointed' with U.S. move to quit United Nations rights body

American Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley says a call for reform has not been heeded

"Of course Finland is committed to the work of the Human Rights Council and based on our experiences we would have hoped that the United States would have continued that co-operation".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley confirmed the nation's exit during a joint appearance at the State Department.

"Let me say it very clearly, if human rights issues are not discussed here, in this very room, they have little chance to be dealt with meaningfully anywhere else", he told the council's 38th session, hours after Washington announced its pullout.

Haley argued that the council acted as a "protector of human rights abusers and cesspool of political bias" and accused the body of "politicizing and scapegoating countries with positive human rights records".

The United States' decision to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council was erroneous, and no one gloats over the matter, she said.

Star Wars Story Spin-Off Movies Reportedly On Hold at Lucasfilm
Chances are Disney and Lucasfilm chose to take the foot off the pedal once Solo began to struggle at the worldwide box office. Initially announced as "anthology" movies, the spinoffs got off to a rocky start and haven't exactly been smooth sailing.

No-one, she argues, is lily white when it comes to human rights, not the least America which has allowed kids to be "ripped away from their parents".

Tyrannical regimes like North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and others sit on the council.

The United States says the council's hypocritical, self righteous about Israel and the West in general, while ignoring the abuses of numerous 47 member countries' which sit on it.

She charged the United States with "stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the existence of serious human rights problems at home while at the same time trying to shape the council under its own interests".

The council is a waste of time and money but does the former number three at the UN Helen Clark, who not surprisingly lost the vote to become the boss on a reform ticket, have a point? "A mere look around the world today demonstrates that the council has failed in its stated objectives".

President Trump directed the US trade representative to prepare new tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports Monday as the two nations moved closer to a trade war. Russian Federation blasted the American move, calling it "boorish" and saying the U.S.

On Twitter, al-Hussein, the United Nations human rights chief, said it was "Disappointing, if not really surprising, news". It added that the US criticism of the council for failing to make changes advocated by Washington appears "cynical".

Haley has been the driving force behind withdrawing from the human rights body, unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council. The official wasn't authorized to comment publicly and insisted on anonymity. In recent months, the United States has participated in attempts to pinpoint rights violations in places like South Sudan, Congo and Cambodia. The tariffs were quickly matched by China on USA exports.

Russia's United Nations mission responded in a statement that the US had tried but failed to turn the Council into an "obedient instrument for advancing their interests and punishing the countries it dislikes".

Once he receives formal notification of the US withdrawal, Suc said he would arrange for the American seat to be removed and work with the General Assembly to elect a replacement member.

European Union says retaliatory tariffs on U.S. to kick in Friday

Bolton, a former ambassador to the U.N. during President George W. Bush's administration, said that the United States is self-governing, and that it does not need the advice of the United Nations or other global bodies on how to do so. The U.S. joined the body only in 2009 under President Barack Obama.
