Domestic abuse victims don’t qualify for USA asylum, rules Jeff Sessions

Trump administration moves to block victims of gang violence domestic abuse from claiming asylum

The decision, which immigration advocates are sure to aggressively fight, came as Sessions seeks to use the authority of his office to sharply change us immigration law to make it less friendly to asylum seekers. He said it will help reduce the growing backlog of 700,000 court cases, more than triple the number in 2009.

In the law's current interpretation, foreign nationals can apply for USA asylum if they claim persecution or fear because of race, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group or political viewpoint, the report said.

Fifteen former immigration judges signed a letter calling Sessions' decision "an affront to the rule of law".

"The mere fact that a country may have problems effectively policing certain crimes - such as domestic violence or gang violence - or that certain populations are more likely to be victims of crime, can not itself establish an asylum claim", he continued.

Dwane Casey coaches the Toronto Raptors against the Washington Wizards during the first round of the playoffs on April 17, 2018. Casey was sacked on May 11 with one year remaining on his contract at a reported $6.5 million.

Monday's decision marks Sessions' latest effort to greatly restrict immigration.

The ruling came as part of a push back to the arrival of thousands of migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador over the past year fleeing widespread violence in their country.

Our nation's immigration laws provide for asylum to be granted to individuals who have been persecuted, or who have a well-founded fear of persecution, on account of their membership in a 'particular social group, ' but most victims of personal crimes do not fit this definition-no matter how vile and reprehensible the crime perpetrated against them. Cracking down on illegal immigration and tightening legal immigration were major themes of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Sessions has been unusually active in this practice compared to his predecessors by exercising his intervention authority to make it harder for some people to legally remain in the United States.

Net neutrality repeal takes effect Monday
Proponents of net neutrality quickly mobilized for the overturn of the FCC's repeal, and last month, the U.S. Per the net neutrality order, states can not enact any legislation that attempts to circumvent the repeal.

Monday's ruling by Sessions centers on an asylum case filed by a Salvadoran woman who entered the United States illegally in 2014. The report was not made from inside the DOJ but by a "third party", police said. That last category often included domestic violence victims and victims of gang violence.

A Charlotte, North Carolina-based immigration judge denied the woman asylum.

Judges will be required to take Sessions ruling into account when decided on asylum cases.

Sessions says this action is necessary to maintain "the rule of law", which is a pretty clear indication that his idea of "the law" includes neither justice nor mercy.
