Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

In urging Trudeau to apologize for his comments, he also said the prime minister's statements were a "diplomatic betrayal" as Trump headed to Singapore to his high-profile summit with North Korean leader with Kim Jong-un.

Mr. Trump addressed the subject of worldwide trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the USA over trade.

Mr Macron's office said France and other European Union countries would maintain their support for the final G7 communique. "This too shall pass", tweeted the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who referred to Trump as a "mafia boss" in his recent tell-all, "A Higher Loyalty".

Trudeau told the president that Canadians did not take it lightly that the USA has moved forward with significant tariffs on their steel and aluminum industry.

A picture of US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel displaying less-than-friendly body language has turned out to be a defining image of the contentious meeting of the G7 leaders of the world's advanced economies. And then Trudeau starts blasting him in a domestic news conference?

At the end of the summit, Trudeau held a press conference where he called Trump's tariff talk "kind of insulting", and said that "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1st, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that Americans have unjustly applied to us".

Trudeau had said Canadians "are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around".

On CTV's Question Period Sunday morning, Former premier of Quebec and deputy prime minister Jean Charest said Canada has to prepare for Trump to act, because as seen with the levelling of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, "he tends to follow through on the threats he makes".

Trudeau said he had reiterated to Trump that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

The outburst against Mr Trudeau, and by association the other G-7 members, is only the latest incident in which Mr Trump has clashed with America's closest allies, even as he has had warm words for autocrats like Mr Kim and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Russian Federation was suspended from the group in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Trump and European allies are also at odds over Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the deal in which Iran curbed its disputed nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, and the Paris climate change accord.
