European Union to begin counter trade tariffs against United States on Friday

The European Union will begin charging import duties of 25 percent on a range of USA products on Friday, in response to U.S tariffs imposed on EU steel and aluminum early this month, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

The EU tit-for-tat tariffs will hit about 200 US products that include steel and aluminum, corn, rice, orange juice, cigarettes, peanuts, cigars, T-shirts, cosmetics and boats.

Duties of 25% will be applied to the raft of United States goods worth €2.8bn - including bourbon, make-up and motorbikes - from 22 June.

The products affected by the move range from agricultural produce such as rice and orange juice to jeans, bourbon, motorbikes and various steel products.

The EU's executive body would have to persuade fellow EU member states to back a radical free-trade approach many have shown little interest in, said Dow Jones.

A separate 10 percent tariff will be imposed on imports of playing cards.

"The rules of worldwide trade that we have developed over the years with our American partners can not be violated without a reaction from our side", Malmstrom said.

"Our response is measured, proportionate and fully in line with WTO rules".

Canada also promised retaliatory tariffs worth $12.8bn on USA products including steel, aluminium, whiskey and orange juice.
