Israeli aircraft strike Hamas targets in Gaza Strip

Boris Johnson meets with Mike Pompeo in Washington

Some observers have questioned that strategy, noting that when Israel withdrew from the Strip in 2005, it left profitable agricultural infrastructure intact, which the Palestinians immediately destroyed.

Israeli warcraft carried out nine successive airstrikes on Hamas military facilities in the Gaza Strip before dawn on Monday, in response to arson kites and balloons fired from the enclave, security sources said.

Israel has drafted in civilian drone enthusiasts as army reservists, instructing them to fly their remote-controlled aircraft into the kites, an Israeli general said, but an effective means to stop the kites has yet to be found.

On Sunday, an Israeli military official warned that if the regime were to respond more harshly to the kites being sent from the Gaza Strip, it would lead to war, Hadashot TV said.

Gazans began flying kites with burning rags attached to them during mass protests against an Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the territory.

Around two million people live in Gaza, a lot of them the descendants of refugees from what is now Israel.

According to Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, 400 kites have been intercepted from some 600 launched since the start of the recent protests.

Israel and Egypt maintain a blockade on the Strip which they say is created to prevent Hamas from importing weapons and other goods that could be used to build fortifications or cross-border tunnels.

Israeli newspapers said two of the rockets landed inside Israel, while the third appeared to have fallen short of reaching its target.

Tottenham's Harry Kane shares what Mauricio Pochettino texted him on Monday
We've got to recover well, we've got to prepare well and we've got to play as well, if not better, in the second game to win that. I'd stick Rashford up front with Kane and drop Sterling back into the midfield three, but that's the only change I'd make.
