Kate Spade New York Donates $1 Million To Mental Health Organizations

The fashion designer died of an apparent suicide earlier this month in her Manhattan apartment.

NEW YORK - Kate Spade New York has announced plans to donate $1 million to support suicide prevention and mental health awareness causes in tribute to the company's late founder. In addition, from June 20 to 29, the Kate Spade New York Foundation will match public donations made to the Crisis Text Line, up to $100K. In 1999, she and husband Andy Spade sold a 56 percent stake of their company to Neiman Marcus, then, in 2006, sold the remaining 44 percent to Neiman, and took time to raise their daughter, Frances Beatrix, whom they welcomed in 2005. "We'll match your donations, too".

Kate Spade New York CEO Anna Bakst said in a statement that she wants to celebrate her company's founder by "carrying on her legacy". As the brand penned on Instagram, they will begin with $250,000 for the Crisis Text Line, a free, 24/7 support line for those in crisis. The text line is confidential and can be used for any sort of crisis situation including mental health crises and suicidal situations.

Just weeks after the death of its founder, the Kate Spade Foundation announced Wednesday that it is donating $1 million to organizations working for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
