Kim Jong Un Takes Selfie During Night Out in Singapore

Industry observers Peaceful North Korea can expand India's Act East markets

North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has taken time out of his busy schedule to pose for a selfie with Singapore dignitaries.

Speaking at his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday, Qassemi pointed to the US-North Korea summit due to be held on Tuesday and said, "Iran's stance on the Korean Peninsula is clear; we are keen to see peace and stability in the region".

North Korea, especially under Kim Jong-un, has pursued nuclear weapons as a means to deter the United States, which it sees as an existential threat in this prolonged and asymmetrical state of confrontation. Moon had expressed hope that the meeting will lead to a three-way declaration also including South Korea on formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War.

Hatred of the U.S. is helped by the very real memories among older North Koreans of the brutal bombing campaign waged against their country by the USA during the Korean war, in which hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed and cities leveled between June 1950 and July 1953.

Before signing what Trump described as a "comprehensive" document, Kim said the two leaders had a historic meeting "and chose to leave the past behind".

Trump responded to that commentary Tuesday on Twitter, saying: "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the US, say the haters & losers".

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday, both staying at luxurious and heavily guarded hotels less than half a mile apart, with Trump at the Shangri-La Hotel and Kim at the St. Regis Hotel.

The White House and State Department have said little about those talks, though people briefed on them said American negotiators found it difficult to make significant headway with the North Koreans, in part because the White House did not back them up in taking a hard line.

"Trump will not want to bust up two summits in a row lest people conclude he is the problem", said Haas, predicting a more pliable president.

Kim spent the day out of view, but was reportedly going on an evening tour of attractions on the city's waterfront, a source familiar with the plan told Reuters.

The leaders are expected to talk one-on-one, with translators only, before heading into a larger meeting.

Mr Lee has said the summit would cost Singapore about S$20 million ($A19 million), more than half of which would go on security.

Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?
Kim said that the "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" as they put pen to paper. The US secretary of state has said Washington will demand "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearisation .

So far, the United States has offered no indication that it has reached a substantive preliminary agreement with North Korea on how to achieve the "complete and verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization that Pompeo reconfirmed on Monday the United States is seeking.

North Korea has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with a reliable security assurance and other benefits.

Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before defecting to South Korea in 2005 told the Washington Post: "Rather than using a public restroom, the leader of North Korea has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels".

Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage in North Korea, which stressed that the talks with Trump would focus on forging a relationship more in tune with what was described as changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear-armed state - and its desire for a mechanism to ensure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearisation.

The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions, which began years before Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign, as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

In a tweet on June 1, the scholar said, "This is the only way to advance if we are to avoid catastrophic failure of diplomacy or catastrophic success, ie, offering up too much to get a deal in Singapore".
