The KCNA added that the two leaders exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including the prospects for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and reached consensus on those discussed issues.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and China president Xi Jinping.

South Korea's president urged North Korea on Wednesday to present a plan with concrete steps toward denuclearization, raising the pressure on its leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to Beijing to discuss the outcome of his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

A report by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said Kim told Xi at a welcoming banquet on Tuesday that North Korea-China ties are developing into "unprecedentedly special relations".

There was no official word on Kim's activities on Wednesday, although South Korea's Yonhap news agency said his motorcade was seen at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing.

The visit follows his Singapore summit, where Kim and Trump reaffirmed a commitment to work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

He made the comments just hours after Mr. Trump escalated his trade feud with China with a threat to impose tariffs of 10 percent on another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods in retaliation for Beijing's disputed intellectual property practices and its aggressive response to previous USA tariffs, a move Chinese officials said they were willing to match.

"While North Korea agreed to nothing new, the United States took the unprecedented step to indefinitely suspend our joint military exercises with our ally", said Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee subpanel on Asia and Pacific issues.

"I think we've made it clear this is a goodwill gesture to strengthen dialogue momentum", Kang said.

Deng Yuwen of the Charhar institute in Beijing, said China would be seeking to use North Korea as a bargaining chip amid heightened trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. Photos from the event show Kim and Xi shaking hands in front of a row of Chinese and North Korean flags - a visual echo of Kim and Trump's much-photographed handshake in Singapore.

Kim said he was willing to bolster bilateral cooperation.

Two American officials told Reuters on Tuesday that North Korea could start that process within the next few days.

During their last China trip, to Dalian in May, several members of the North Korean delegation visited the Donggang business district and state-owned electronics manufacturer Hualu Group.

In Beijing, Kim is likely to ask Xi to ease up on economic sanctions - something the United States strongly opposes.
