Microsoft employees demand cancellation of contracts with ICE

Microsoft has come under fire after a blog post from January resurfaced, detailing how the company is "proud to support" Immigration and Customs Enforcement with a contract for their Azure Government Cloud software.

In its statement, Microsoft noted that it is not directly working with ICE or U.S. Customs and Border Protection on these immigration policies and is "not aware" of its software "being used for this objective".

The letter from Microsoft employees was first obtained by the New York Times and verified by Gizmodo.

A petition signed by more than 150 employees started circulating Tuesday, asking Microsoft to cancel its contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

USA feeling effect of Chinese retaliatory tariffs
After all, companies from the advanced economies of the U.S., Europe and Japan share the same gripes. Department of Agriculture, and Iowa is the nation's second-largest soybean grower, per the Register.

Around 1 p.m. ET Monday, the section about ICE on the blog post appeared to be removed, only to reappear about 20 minutes later.

"As the people who build the technologies that Microsoft profits from, we refuse to be complicit", the letter reads.

The letter demands that Microsoft end its $19 million contract with the agency to use the company's Azure cloud product for sensitive data processing. In it, the company expressed pride at working with the immigration agency.

While keeping to the rather neutral tones of such canned statements, Microsoft made it clear that it's not in favour of separating immigrants from their children at USA borders. It also urged the Trump administration to change that policy.

We hear from Ashwin Willemse moments after SuperSport walkout investigation
Khobane said that Mallett and Botha would return to on-air duty in the near future on a date to be confirmed. Last month, an angry Willemse walked off the set accusing the two of being patronising.

In its statement, however, Microsoft said it is not working with ICE or U.S. Customs and Border Protection on "any projects related to separating children from their families at the border" and that it is unaware of Azure being used for that objective.

There have been numerous reports of U.S. immigration separating immigrants entering the United States from their children thanks to the policies put in place by the increasingly toxic - depending on your stance - Trump administration.

His post called on Congress to improve security at the border while also remembering the "fundamental decency and humanitarian spirit that defines us as a people and a nation".

"Any engagement with any government has been and will be guided by our ethics and principles", Nadella wrote. The company has since said that move was "a mistake", blaming the "brief" change on an unidentified employee who was responding to the mounting social media backlash. We've reached out to Microsoft about the letter and will update this story when we hear back.
