Millennials are the cheapest tippers

But when it comes to rewarding the waiters and bartenders who serve them, those wallets often stay closed.

Those over age 38 tend to be more generous tippers, according to the survey; 51 percent of responders say they leave a 20 percent tip.

"In some ways, it's not surprising at all because of the well-documented financial struggles of millennials - whether it's struggling to get their feet under them career-wise, or student loan debt, or any of myriad other reasons", Matt Schulz, senior industry analyst at CreditCards.com, told Moneyish.

A new study published Sunday by CreditCards.com showed that young adults ages 18-37 tip the least out of any age group.

An estimated one out of every three rows of US soybeans is shipped to China, Eller said, citing farmer estimates. "Everyone knows. The Trump administration said Friday that it will impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion of Chinese exports.

Older adults, on the other hand, tip more.

Millennials - defined in the report as people aged 18 to 37, versus Pew Research's age range of 22 to 37 - also tipped a median 15 percent at restaurants, in contrast to the overall 18 percent median. Ten percent of millennials said they routinely do not tip, and one in three leaves a restaurant tip of less than 15 percent.

Why are these American youth, many of whom work in tip-reliant industries, so cheap?

"We're seeing younger adults tipping less, and even showing a greater preference toward eliminating tipping altogether, even if it means paying more on the bill", Schulz said. The answer may be economic.

Millennials may have more in common with other populations that tip less, like lower incomes or less education.

Tipping, a practice treated as standard in the US but not so much in other countries, is increasingly being questioned, given research that shows a server's age and appearance has much to do with how much one earns in tips. Millennials do tend to spend more of their disposable income eating out, according to 2017 data from Merrill Lynch.

But twenty and thirtysomethings aren't the only skinflint demographic. Men, southerners, westerners, parents with young children, lower earners and the less educated said they tip less in restaurants than the overall median of 18 per cent, according to the study. While there's no obligation to tip on takeout, the Institute says, you should offer 10 percent for a large, complicated order or for extra service like curb delivery.

The study found people who are college educated, over the age of 65, from the Northeast and Midwest, and women all reported leaving a median of 20 per cent - an above-average tip.
