Mysterious ‘crashed UFO’ on Mars ‘could have formed in life-giving explosion’

Using data captured from various Mars orbiters, they found that rock in the formation is unusually porous, being about a third less dense than the rest of the Martian crust.

The study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, reveals that Medusae Fossae was deposited when explosive volcanic eruptions occurred on Mars over 3 billion years in the past.

As expected by the scientists, the inferences of this study would help them in further understanding of the Red Planet's geology and also could yield clearer response to whether the Mars colonization could be possible.

For decades, the Medusae Fossae Formation, a massive and unusual hilly landscape that extends for more than 3,100 miles across Mars's equators has baffled scientists.

European Union slaps retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods
European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said duties imposed by the USA on the EU go against "all logic and history". Trump has brushed aside concerns over a trade war, saying the US can't lose because it already has such a significant deficit.

First observed in the 1960s using the Mariner spacecraft, the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) has always been a subject of numerous speculations. New research suggests the vast formation was built up during bouts of explosive volcanic eruptions more than three billion years ago when huge amounts of climate-changing gases were pumped into the Martian atmosphere along with enough water to cover the entire planet to a depth of four inches. To understand just how massive an eruption this must have been, the researchers explain that when compared to Earth, a much larger planet, the largest volcanic deposit is about 100 times smaller than the Medusae Fossae Formation.

"This is a massive deposit", Ojha said in a statement, "not only on a Martian scale, but also in terms of the solar system, because we do not know of any other deposit that is like this".

Greenhouse gases could have kept the planet's surface warm for liquid water that covered the planet. This enormously affected Mars' potential for supporting life, rendering it virtually inhabitable since then.

They also used radar and gravity data in combination to show the Medusae Fossae's density can not be explained by the presence of ice, which is much less dense than rock.

Trump reverses on family separations
Plus, even if children are returned to their parents quickly, the trauma could have lifelong effects , advocates say. The adults went to one place to await criminal charges, while their children were sent to another facility.

Scientists have known about the Medusae Fossae for decades, but were unsure whether wind, water, ice or volcanic eruptions deposited rock debris in that location. According to the study, the researchers noted the MFF as a "relatively porous unit" and theorized its evolution was the result of "explosive volcanic eruptions".

Volcanic eruption takes place in stages as water vapor and carbon dioxide forces the molten rock upwards.

Mars environment is more multifaceted than the scientist thought.

"If you were to distribute the Medusae Fossae globally, it would make a 9.7-meter (32-foot) thick layer", Ojha said. "Given the sheer magnitude of this deposit, it really is incredible because it implies that the magma was not only rich in volatiles [but] also that it had to be volatile-rich for long periods of time".

For the first time ever, Johns Hopkins University planetary scientist Lujendra Ojha and his colleagues were able to measure the density of rocks from MFF.
