New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern goes into hospital to give birth

New Zealand's prime minister has arrived at the hospital to have her first child.

The PM's office says there will be no further formal announcements from the Prime Minister's office till Ardern and Gayford announce the birth of their baby.

The Herald spoke to a Kiwi midwife about how long the country is likely going to have to wait for Ardern to appear - Kate Middleton-esque - on the hospital steps with Clarke Gayford to present their little bundle to the nation.

On Tuesday, Longoria welcomed a baby boy named Santiago Enrique with her husband Jose Antonio Bastón. U.S. along with releasing the adorable name of her new arrival.

Jacinda Ardern's office on Thursday morning confirmed she had turned the reigns over to her deputy after arriving at Auckland Hospital.

Ms Ardern, who was due to give birth on June 17, has not publicly revealed the sex of her baby.

Mr Peters - a colourful political veteran and head of the populist New Zealand First party - had already taken over some of Ms Ardern's duties in recent days, including running cabinet meetings in the capital of Wellington while she stayed close to home in Auckland.

Ardern has said she is confident the government will continue to run smoothly in her absence.
