Silence, pause, resign: Mehbooba’s reaction after BJP pull out in J&K

The conflict-ridden state will now be under Governor's Rule, which means the BJP-led federal government will run the state for the next six months.

Governor's rule has been imposed in Indian occupied Kashmir (IOK) after Indian President Ram Nath Kovind approved its imposition with immediate effect.

Moments after the announcement, Mehbooba Mufti resigned as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, Mehbooba said: "We didn't stitch this alliance for power".

Mehbooba maintained that Jammu and Kashmir was not an enemy territory as being perceived by a few. It is untenable for the BJP to continue in alliance with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir. Things came to a head on Sunday when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh lifted the ceasefire that the government had put in force during the month of Ramzan.

The Hindu nationalist BJP had entered into an unlikely alliance with a regional party after an inconclusive election in 2014 to govern the region where Indian forces have struggled to quell a freedom movement for decades. The Saffron party's ties with the ruling PDP severed over the time and forced BJP to finally withdrew its support.

"BJP had joined hands with PDP to form the J&K government with some goals. After the situation is restored, we will consider what to do in the future and take the political process forward", he said. She said the ceasefire didn't bring the desired results because the other side (Pakistan) did not respond.

"That is why we had a unilateral ceasefire which had given relief to the people here". Since then, incidents have more than doubled over the last four years to 2017.

But even before this past month, the two parties had been drifting apart, both locked into a war of words both publicly and privately, each blaming the other for massive mob violence and the rising militancy in Kashmir.

"The situation will return to normalcy once dialogue is started but the GoI has practically not shown any keen interest except political statements", said a senior PDP leader.

She also stressed on the need for talks with Pakistan and the Kashmiri people for the resolution of the decades-long conflict.

People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that "a muscular policy" can not work in Jammu and Kashmir. She added that her target was to save Article 370 that gives special status to the state and PDP did that for 3-4 years. The BJP asserted that the party could not further support the party with an alliance in the state.

"My father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, was convinced that unless we involve the central leadership, leaders who are in power in Delhi, no government here will be able to deliver". We acted in the case of the rape and murder of an eight-year-old Bakerwal girl.
