Trump claims North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat

Pompeo, who flew to Seoul to brief South Korean leaders on the summit, said the USA wants North Korea to take "major" nuclear disarmament steps within the next two years - before the end of Trump's first term in 2021.

Other pages showed United States and North Korean officials having their extended meeting, a working lunch and later, Trump and Kim signing a joint agreement that marked the end to the summit.

On Tuesday, Trump tweeted: "We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith - which both sides are!"

On the issue the world has been most fixated on - North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal meant to target the entire USA mainland - Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past vows to work toward a denuclearised Korean Peninsula.

Those moves were unthinkable even several months ago, when the two unpredictable leaders threatened to nuke each other and traded a series of harsh personal insults.

The pair promised in the document to "build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula and to repatriate remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action during the Korean War.

"We will never go back to the past again and never give up on this bold journey".

Her mum, the Duchess of Cambridge , who often likes to coordinate Charlotte's outfits with hers, was also wearing a summery frock. George, who's known to have an interest in police, was also pictured playing with what looked like a toy knife and handcuffs.

Former U.S. ambassador Bill Richardson told VOA he is concerned about no verification of what the North Koreans will do about missile technology in their country, no details of nuclear reduction or the peace treaty ending the Korean War from the early 1950s, and human rights.

And on Wednesday, the official newspaper of the Workers' Party of Korea featured three full pages of photos from Kim's summit with Trump.

North Korea sees the annual exercises as a rehearsal for invasion, but the government in Seoul maintains they are defensive in nature. It's going to start very quickly.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", he continued.

Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who also opposed the Iran deal, took issue with Trump's zeal as well as his announcement of the suspension of U.S.

Most Western observers have said the deal includes no new commitments from North Korea nor details on how denuclearisation could be achieved or verified. "We are working with South Korea, Japan, China to a lesser extent".

"As the whole world is swept in huge interest in and excitement about the historic, unprecedented summit, Kim left his hotel on the night of 12th to return home after successfully wrapping up the North Korea-U.S. summit in Singapore", Korean Central TV reported. He said cancellation of the drills "is really a bad idea. and [Trump] betrayed our people".

Responding to the barrage of criticism in Seoul a day after Trump met Kim in Singapore, Pompeo said he "most definitively" expected to see nuclear disarmament before Trump's current term ends on January 20, 2021.

On Wednesday Mr Trump took to Twitter, saying: "The World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe!"

Thirteen seconds. That's how long the American and North Korean leaders shook hands at the start of their summit Tuesday. But he kept trying to reach out to North Korea, and eventually found a role as a mediator after Kim offered in January to send a delegation to the South Korean Winter Olympics.

"From now on, there will be various kinds of bargaining toward a Japan-North Korea summit", the unnamed official said.

Pyongyang in return "commits to work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

Kim may have best summed up the surreal quality of what was happening when he said that many of those watching will think it's a scene from a "science fiction movie".
