Trump Considering Muhammad Ali Pardon Even Though He Doesn't Need One

Muhammad Ali

Trump said he was thinking "very seriously" about pardoning Ali as well as other "folks that have some sentences that aren't fair". Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a meeting with in Canada with US allies that his team was "looking at literally thousands of names" of people for potential pardons because they were treated unfairly or their sentences are too long.

Trump has wielded his presidential pardon powers recently in ways that appear meant to dramatize his own complaints of being the victim of a "witch hunt" by USA prosecutors. The Supreme Court overturned Ali's conviction in 1971.

It's safe to say that President Donald Trump is throwing a pardon party. And in January 1977, President Jimmy Carter pardoned those who broke Selective Service laws in the Vietnam era.

Trump clearly pleased with the publicity he's gained with his recent celebrity pardons, made a point this morning of informing reporters he's got more up his sleeve.

In a statement earlier, Tweel said that although he appreciated Trump's sentiment, a "pardon is unnecessary". He regained the boxing title in 1974 in the classic "Rumble in the Jungle" fight in the former Zaire against George Foreman.

Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, refused to join the US Army in 1967 at the height of the Vietnam War, claiming conscientious objector status.

Johnson, who served nearly 22 years in federal prison for a first-time criminal offense, was pardoned this week.

"The pardons are a very positive things for a president", Trump said. Trump revealed in April that he was considering a full pardon after hearing about it from actor Sylvester Stallone.
