Trump criticizes Justin Trudeau, says US won’t endorse G7 statement

The US president is en route to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong un, which Trump described as a "mission of peace".

Trudeau said he had reiterated to Mr. Trump, who left the G7 meeting before it ended, that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently slapped tariffs on Canada, Mexico and the European Union, angering his counterparts before he arrived at the summit.

G7 includes the seven leading industrialized countries of Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.

That was Justin Trudeau's late father, who served several terms as Canada's prime minister, starting in the late 1960s.

Trudeau's office, in turn, said the what the Canadian leader said on Saturday was nothing new.

Kudlow says Trudeau's actions were a "sophomoric play" and says the prime minister stabbed his US allies in the back, which he argues did a great disservice to the whole G7. -North Korea summit Tuesday as part of the reason Trump made a decision to withdraw from the communique, suggesting the president did not want to look weak as he prepares to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trudeau had said Canadians "are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around". "Kim must not see American weakness". In response to US duties, Canada has already issued its own tariff threats, which Trudeau said would go into effect on July 1. Making the announcement on the Twitter social network, he accused Trudeau of "false statements", and being "Very dishonest & weak" in an extraordinary attack on the leader of one of the US's biggest allies. He said that Canada has to stand up for itself.

Mr Trump has long said the North American Free Trade Agreement has been a "disaster" for the U.S. and has insisted that it be renegotiated. Trump swiftly responded to Trudeau by upending the communiqué in a series of tweets Saturday evening.

Kudlow said Trudeau had engaged in a "a sophomoric political stunt for domestic consumption" and should apologize.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow continued the war of words between the Trump administration and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday morning.

Earlier in the day, reports The New York Times, Trudeau said the seven nations had come to an agreement on several foreign policy and economic goals, but he noted that some disagreements with Trump, primarily those on trade, remained.
