Trump falsely claims crime in Germany is 'way up'

GERMANY-EUROPE-POLITICS-GOVERNMENT-MIGRATION

Seehofer's party met in Munich to affirm its backing for his so-called migration masterplan comprising 63 measures, the most contentious of which is to start turning migrants away at the border.

Seehofer has called for police borders to turn back refugees and migrants arriving from other European Union countries but signalled he would give Merkel two weeks' grace to reach migration agreements with European Union partners.

"The rejections will take effect from the first week of July at the latest if no effective results are achieved at the upcoming European Union summit", the statement said. She also acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead: "I am under pressure now, and those who know Europe know that this is not easy".

The regulations have already admitted more than one million migrants into Germany, who are then allowed to travel to other European Union member states without restriction.

Meanwhile, Mrs Merkel is in a different migration dispute with her interior minister, Horst Seehofer.

Mr Seehofer told Bild am Sonntag newspaper: 'No one in the CSU has an interest in bringing down the chancellor, to break up the CDU/CSU parliamentary alliance or to blow up the coalition.

World Health Organization declares compulsive video gaming a mental disorder
World Health Organization accepted the proposal that Gaming Disorder should be listed as a new issue based on scientific evidence. The AP notes that The American Psychiatric Association still does not label Gaming Disorder as a mental health condition.

The CSU's top priority is a hard October state election in Bavaria in which it is trying to tamp down support for the anti-migration Alternative for Germany party.

End of the road for Merkel?

That, in turn, could lead to the collapse of Merkel's government, which also includes the center-left Social Democrats, who joined only reluctantly and are still struggling to recover from their poor showing in the national election last September.

Her position as chancellor is now in question, but it remains unclear precisely how the situation will develop.

Seehofer said he had told fellow leaders that "we're not out of the woods yet".

As interior minister, Seehofer has drawn up a 63-point plan for tackling migration to Germany. "The party executive believes that rejecting people at the border is an indispensable part of the reorganization of the asylum system".

Hogan Gidley, a White House deputy press secretary, charged Monday that Democrats are blocking a legislative solution to the problem because they want "a radical open-border policy".

When she finally gave a reply several weeks ago, it fell short of many of Macron's core demands.

The meeting in Berlin followed a week of political upheaval in Germany and the rest of Europe in response to mass migration into the EU.

But Seehofer, long one of the fiercest critics of Merkel's liberal refugee policy, said Germany must change direction on immigration. "Of course, it would be good if there is a European solution, but in three years that hasn't been reached".

The prospects of Merkel reaching a deal on migration with Conte on Monday would appear slim. France and Italy have already agreed to a similar arrangement. Current rules stipulate that refugees need to register their asylum application in the first European Union country they arrive in.
