Trump, Kim pile on charm at summit, but no word on progress

Trump predicts ‘terrific relationship’ with Kim Jong Un as historic summit begins

U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un before their bilateral meeting at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

Rodman, who is one of a handful of Westerners to have visited reclusive North Korea and met Kim Jong Un, arrived in Singapore on Monday, the eve of the summit, declaring he was "excited to be part of it".

During a tour of various attractions in Singapore on Monday, Kim said "Singapore is clean and handsome and every building is stylish" as he had heard of in the past, according to the KCNA.

In recent days, Trump had suggested the meeting could last days, potentially even resulting in a nuclear deal.

On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up the pace, with USA and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

Shanmugam said that four people have been turned away at Singapore's immigration checkpoints in the lead-up to the summit.

After a handshake, they were soon smiling and holding each other by the arm, before Trump guided Kim to the library where they held a meeting with only their interpreters. "Many of us are praying for a successful meeting in #Singapore".

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that happened, Pompeo said. He's been a veteran diplomat on the issue of North Korea for over a decade.

Trump had lowered expectations for the results of the summit in the last couple weeks, saying it was the start of a process meant for the two leaders to get to know each other.

Pompeo in a statement described the meetings as "substantive and detailed" and said Trump was "well-prepared" to meet the North Korean leader.

Trump's supporters have floated the idea that forging such a treaty, which would need a signoff from China and South Korea, would deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sitting across Mr Kim and his team at the larger meeting was the U.S. leader, his chief of staff John Kelly, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North. Economic adviser Larry Kudlow told CBS News in Washington that "Kim must not see American weakness", adding that by criticizing new tariffs, Trudeau was "pouring collateral damage on this whole Korean trip".

Mr Kim arrived in town on Sunday for a historic summit on Tuesday with US President Donald Trump to discuss possible denuclearisation efforts. "Thank you very much".

"I think within the first minute - my touch, my feel, that's what I do", the president said, touting his deal-making experience as a businessman.

"They may be able to pull rabbits out of a hat that the rest of us conventional diplomats would not have been able to do", he said.

North Korea signed onto a goal of "complete denuclearization" of the peninsula in an April 27 declaration with South Korea.
