Trump threatens to slap China with $200 billion in new tariffs

Trump said Monday that China's decision to retaliate in kind against his first batch of $50 billion in tariffs - announced on Friday - required a USA response to encourage China to change its unfair practices.

US President Donald Trump directed the US Trade Representative to prepare new tariffs on US$200 billion (NZ$288b) in Chinese imports as the two nations moved closer to a potential trade war.

With the world's two largest economies already engaged in a confrontation long feared by markets and industry, Trump said he was pushing forward with fresh punitive measures over Beijing's "unacceptable" move to raise its own tariffs.

The Trump administration said Friday that it will impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion of Chinese exports.

China has a list of U.S. imports earmarked for tariffs.

20 injured in shooting at USA art festival, suspect dead
Onofri said an investigation is underway to determine if the suspect was shot and killed by police or someone else. The shooting began at the Art All Night festival that showcases local art, music and food a little before 3 a.m.

President Trump says the tariffs on Chinese imports are a response to the country's unfair trade practices, including what administration officials contend are requirements that USA companies share their intellectual property in exchange for access to China. "Rather than altering those practices, it is now threatening United States companies, workers, and farmers who have done nothing wrong", he said.

Trump's comments come hours after the top U.S. diplomat accused China of engaging in "predatory economics 101" and an "unprecedented level of larceny" of intellectual property.

"But the United States will no longer be taken advantage of on trade by China and other countries in the world".

An estimated one out of every three rows of US soybeans is shipped to China, Eller said, citing farmer estimates.

"Everyone knows. China is the main perpetrator", he said.

Russian Federation charges two England fans taken off World Cup train
He said: "Obviously Russian soldiers that were killed in the great battle - it means a lot to them, it means a lot to us". We kept fighting and got the late goal and a big win", England midfielder Jordan Henderson said.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I have an excellent relationship with President Xi, and we will continue working together on many issues", Trump said.

The first round of US tariffs worth $34 billion will go into effect on July 6, while a second batch valued at $16 billion will undergo further review, USTR said last week.

He has in recent weeks chose to implement steep tariffs against China and other key USA allies, despite warnings from congressional lawmakers that doing so could harm American workers and erase gains made from the Republican tax package. Trump also has slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and European allies. "We do our best to call out unfair economic behaviours as well".

"Further action must be taken to encourage China to change its unfair practices, open its market to United States goods, and accept a more balanced trade relationship with the United States", Trump said in a statement.
