U.S. expected to withdraw from United Nations human rights council

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric declined to comment until a US decision was announced, but added: "The Secretary-General is a strong believer in the human rights architecture of the United Nations and the active participation of all states".

A State Department spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, while the United Nations said it hadn't received a notification that the USA was withdrawing.

The decision was reportedly based on the Council's bias against Israel and its extension of membership to notorious human rights abusers.

Trump calls for US$200B more tariffs on China; US futures drop
Spokesman Geng Shuang told a press briefing that the U.S. should "stop its damaging words and deeds". The move would be the largest blow in the tit-for-tat tariff fight between the U.S. and China.

Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, outgoing United Nations high commissioner for human rights, attends a Human Rights Council session in Geneva on June 18. It would represent another retreat by the Trump administration from global groups and agreements whose policies it deems out of sync with American interests on trade, defense, climate change and, now, human rights.

When the Human Rights Council was created in 2006, U.S. President George W. Bush's administration shunned the body.

Haley's reform agenda included competitive council elections, an end to secret ballots, and terminating support for the anti-Israel BDS movement. Trump's administration, led by UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, has been threatening to leave the council for months.

For years, for eight long Barack Obama years, the pro-America types in politics have criticized the HRC for this or that, or that or this, nearly all tied to its anti-West, anti-Israel actions - not to mention its galling habit of putting heads of state with little regard for human rights in charge of dictating and overseeing global, human rights' policies. Item 7 on "Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories" has been part of the council's regular business nearly as long as it has existed.

Officials said the administration had concluded that its efforts to promote reform on the council had failed and that withdrawal was the only step it could take to demonstrate its seriousness. She has also called for ways to expel members of the council that have poor human rights records themselves. It was not immediately clear if the US would remain a non-voting observer on the council.

Since 2006, the Human Rights Council has passed more than 70 resolutions critical of Israel, 10 times as often as it has criticized Iran.

However, critics point out that the administration can simply end the "zero-tolerance" approach. "Let's solve it", Nielsen said . Customs and Border Protection where children taken from their parents are housed. "This is nothing short of torture".

The reported move comes amid intense criticism over the Trump administration's policy of separating child migrants from their parents at the US-Mexico border. The US joined the body only in 2009 under President Barack Obama.
