U.S. to announce 'deal of the century' soon: Kushner

US President Donald Trump and his senior adviser Jared Kushner

A top Palestinian official fired back at the Trump administration Sunday, after senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said in an interview that the Palestinian Authority was "scared" of U.S. peace efforts and that he doubted its leadership had the capacity or desire to finalize an agreement with Israel.

Kushner, who is on the last leg of his Middle East tour, spoke to the popular Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds, claiming he is "ready to work" with leader Mahmoud Abbas, who, in his turn, is refusing to meet with Kushner as long as Washington is "changing the rules of the game" midway.

Referring to comments by Abbas adviser Nabil Abu Rudeineh, who said Saturday that the U.S. peace mission was a waste of time, Kushner said the Palestinian leaders fear the plan might receive popular support.

Washington has said it has a peace plan, but Abbas has refused to meet with Trump's team following his decision in December to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the U.S. Embassy there.

Kroos missile secures last-gasp Germany win
We are just thinking about winning this game, the bad start makes it super hard but we know that we are a strong team. So I was very angry. "We ask you [to let us rest] with all our heart and we thank you for all the support".

The article was published after the White House confirmed that Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, whom Trump has named as a special representative for global negotiations, met on Saturday evening in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and US Ambassador David Friedman "to continue their discussions that began on Friday".

"The goal behind this is to sustain the [Hamas] coup and keep Gaza separated from the West Bank on the way to creating a mini-state in Gaza while bringing down the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank", Erekat said.

Saudi Arabia is said to have offered Abbas the money needed for the PA to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip in return for him accepting Trump's deal.

"However, I do question how much President Abbas has the ability to, or is willing to, lean into finishing a deal. A peace hasn't been achieved during that period".

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh responded to Kushner's interview by restating that American efforts will yield no result if they bypass the Palestinian leadership, and if they are not aimed at an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. The situation started before President Trump came into power but we have to try to make improvements. "The level of despair reveals the worst scenario that can happen when things are left without a solution and when it is allowed to continue". Hamas is regarded as a terrorist organization by Israel and the United States.

"Dr. Erekat - we have heard your voice for decades and it has not achieved anything close to Palestinian aspirations or anything close to a comprehensive peace agreement", Greenblatt wrote.

He will hold talks with both Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

In the interview, Kushner again refused to go into details on his peace plan.
