United Nations votes by strong majority to condemn Israel over Gaza violence

A UN General Assembly resolution called "Protection of the Palestinian civilian population" has passed overwhelmingly on Wednesday, with a vote of 120-8.

A USA bid to condemn Hamas, a Palestinian fundamentalist group, for attacks on Israel also received a majority vote in favor - 62-58 with 42 abstaining - but the president of the General Assembly rejected it because it didn't have the required two-thirds majority to pass.

More than 120 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza border protests since March 30.

The proposed USA amendment would also condemn the diversion of resources in Gaza to building tunnels to infiltrate Israel and equipment to fire rockets and express "grave concern" at the destruction of the Kerem Shalom crossing point to Israel "by actors in Gaza".

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called that Kuwait-sponsored resolution "grossly one-sided" for criticizing the use of force by Israel while not mentioning the Islamic militant group Hamas, which rules Gaza.

Kushner and Greenblatt also have laid the blame for violence on Israel's border with the Gaza Strip exclusively on Hamas, the terrorist group that controls Gaza.

Apple to undercut popular law-enforcement tool for cracking iPhones
According to a new rumor out of China, the company is only going to support the standard in the smartphones it releases next year. This has allowed law enforcement officials and others to easily gain access to pretty much any iPhone.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley appealed, citing another rule that says only a majority vote was required.

Haley said in a statement afterward that "in the face of Hamas terrorists routinely inciting violence. today the United Nations made the morally bankrupt judgment that the recent Gaza violence is all Israel's fault".

"Israel's use of lethal force when there was no imminent threat to life has taken a heavy toll in life and limb", said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

The General Assembly vote on Wednesday garnered fewer votes in favor than a similar one in December that rejected President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Haley had warned at the time that Washington was "taking names" of countries that supported the resolution. The killings coincided with the opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem.

Brett Bruen, a former Obama administration official and president of Global Situation Room, told CBS News at the United Nations on Wednesday that USA actions in the Middle East are "costly for Israel, which has grown further isolated" as the US irritates allies and emboldens adversaries.

Malnutrition, cholera and other diseases have killed or sickened thousands of civilians over the years. The coalition aims to restore the government of self-exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

In apparent frustration, Haley said "for some, attacking Israel is their favorite political sport".

Australia, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, the Solomon Islands and Togo joined the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution.

The European Union's ambassador Joanne Adamson, deputy head of the delegation to the United Nations said "Israeli security forces must refrain from the excessive use of force against unarmed civilians".

The resolution condemned the "firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip against Israeli civilian areas", which have increased following clashes, and requested the United Nations secretary general submit a written response regarding the safety of the Palestinian civilian population.

"By supporting this resolution you are colluding with a terrorist organization, by supporting this resolution you are empowering Hamas", Danon said.
