(US-NK summit) Expectations running high for successful outcomes

He has said the talks would be more about starting a relationship with Kim for a negotiating process that would take more than one summit.

According to BBC, before setting off, US President Trump described the summit as a "one-time shot" at peace and said the two were in "unknown territory in the truest sense".

The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches. One dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency said North Korea and the USA would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing new relations, building a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism", achieving denuclearization and "other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

The report notes the summit is being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world".

The two were North Korean cameramen waiting to capture images of their leader, who all North Koreans are duty-bound to revere, arriving for a historic summit with U.S. president Donald Trump.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted on his official Twitter account a picture of him shaking hands with Kim upon his arrival.

North Korean soldiers keep watch toward the south in the village of Panmunjom, South Korea, on April 17. Kim visited China twice this year, but the North's media made them public only after he returned to Pyongyang.

Trump's efforts to make peace with a country that is still technically at war with the United States received backing from his fellow G7 members in a joint statement issued after the U.S. president's departure.

Now North Korean officials will nearly certainly emphasise preventing any sudden mishaps in Kim Jong Un's first visit to a foreign country other than China or South Korea since taking power, said Kim Doo-hyun, professor of protection politics at Korea National Sport University.

Kim and Trump both arrived in Singapore a few hours apart on Sunday.

But last month, Trump abruptly cancelled the Singapore summit, citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang.

In their letter, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called for any agreement with North Korea to meet five key points: that all weapons of mass destruction be removed or dismantled; that there be no uranium enrichment or plutonium reprocessing; that it end all ballistic missile testing; that it allow "anytime, anywhere" inspections of its facilities; and that a deal be permanent.

Since the 1950-53 Korean War, leaders of the DPRK and the United States have never met previously - or even spoken on the telephone. Francis said he wanted yet again to send "a special thought in friendship and prayer" to the beloved Korean people.

Kim Jong Un, who has rarely left his country during his time as leader, arrived first in Singapore and was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, before making his way by motorcade to the St. Regis Hotel.

Kim smiled broadly in the meeting Sunday evening.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (North Korea) and the United States, and thanks to your honest efforts".

North Korea's Kim landed Singapore's Changi Airport earlier on Sunday, in his longest trip overseas as head of state.

Entrepreneurs have been scrambling to cash in on the global media spectacle, hawking Trump-Kim fusion burgers and summit-themed cocktails.
