Wife of Benjamin Netanyahu charged with fraud, breach of trust

Sara Netanyahu is accused of misusing around $100,000 in official funds for catering services

When Netanyahu was told she may face a possible corruption trial in September previous year, the Office the Prime Minister's official Facebook page published a post denying Sara's involvement and said the allegations were "absurd and will be proven to be unfounded".

Israelis have been holding weekly protests to demand the prime minister's resignation over the corruption scandals, but Netanyahu has described the events as part of efforts meant to topple him "at any cost".

Sara Netanyahu's extravagant living has always been a topic of controversy in the country, and husband Benjamin still faces a number of police investigations into alleged corruption, the AP reported. In 2016, a court ruled she abused an employee and awarded the man $42,000 in damages.

In one case, the prime minister and his family are suspected of receiving one million shekels worth of luxury cigars, champagne and jewellery from wealthy individuals in exchange for financial or personal favours.

She is alleged to have falsely stated there were no cooks available at the prime minister's official residence.
