The two remaining Blockbuster stores in Alaska are set to close, marking the end of an era in what has always been one of the video rental business's last strongholds.

With the shuttering of the two Alaska locations, that leaves one lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the last holdout of the company's years-long demise.

If movie-streaming seems like Goliath, Blockbuster video store owners are an industry's Davids still fighting to keep the brand alive. After announcing it would close its final 300 retail stores, the company vowed to continue serving customers online through an On Demand app.

‘Downton Abbey’ movie is a go, with original cast
The original cast will reunite for the film and series' creator Julian Fellowes has already penned the screenplay. The series finale - a Christmas special - brought the story to a seeming close on New Year's Eve 1925.

It's not clear how many (if any) Blockbuster stores have survived outside the U.S. She was shocked to learn that her store will soon be the only one in the country. It's a bit of a destination.

"It's kind of emotional", she said. According to Deadline, at Blockbuster's peak it had "more than 9,000 stores, half outside the United States, and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide".

Not even a shout out from John Oliver, the host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, could prevent the once popular video rental chain from going completely extinct.

Nets Trade Away Jeremy Lin, Isaiah Whitehead In Separate Deals
The Coney Island native averaged 6.3 points and 1.3 assists in 16 games last season, spending much of the year in the G League. The Brooklyn Nets traded Lin on Thursday night to the Atlanta Hawks , according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski .

Just a few months earlier, one of the Anchorage Blockbusters stores enjoyed a brief renaissance after John Oliver gifted it a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe in the movie Cinderella Man.

Kevin Daymude, general manager of the Anchorage store, said the closing of both stores has not only to do with the ending of both leases but also the economy. But ultimately, it wasn't enough. We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years.

"You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone", he said. A Facebook post near the end of June on the Blockbuster Alaska page read, "We see you out there taking selfies in front of our stores, show them to us!" What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.
