At least 134 confirmed dead as Japan combs through mud for missing

Severe rainfall leaves dozens dead in Japan

Local media said search operations are continuing, with dozens of people still missing after the worst weather-related disaster in Japan in over three decades.

Rescue workers in Japan battled on July 9 to reach residents trapped after devastating rains that have killed at least 75 people, as authorities warned about the risk of landslides.

Nearly 2 million people were still subject to evacuation orders, while tens of thousands of rescue workers battled mud, water and rubble to search for survivors stranded in their homes.

"We've never had this kind of rain before", a Japanese Meteorological Agency official said.

In the town of Mihara, roads were transformed into muddy flowing rivers, with dirt piled up on either side as flood water gushed around the wheels of stranded cars.

"I'm anxious because I have no idea how long it will stay like this".

According to The Japan Times, Leaf - a nine-year-old miniature mare - was found on the roof in the Mabicho area of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.

She escaped the house on Saturday, crossing the street to take shelter in a three-storey care home for the elderly, from where she watched in horror as the waters rose.

Elsewhere, work crews tried to clear multiple small landslides that coated roads, rendering them virtually impassable. A similar order was issued Tuesday in the town of Fuchu, also in Hiroshima, after driftwood backed up in a river, causing water to crest over its banks and submerge surrounding neighbourhoods.

"Without water, we can't really clean anything up".

"We are doing our best".

"As far as we could see from the helicopter, no-one is now waving for help", a rescue worker from Kurashiki city told AFP. Time is running out.

Tens of thousands of rescue workers deployed from around the country-firefighters, police officers, Self-Defense Forces members and Coast Guard personnel-are involved in large-scale search-and-rescue activities.

"I can't go back if I wanted to", the 66-year-old retired Self-Defence serviceman said, holding a bird cage, in which the birds chirped as he spoke.

Many locations logged their heaviest rainfall on record for 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour periods as a rainy front hovered over the region and a typhoon neared the archipelago, according to the agency.

The toll has risen steadily since then, and the conditions have made rescue operations hard, with some desperate citizens taking to Twitter to call for help.

Over 2 lakh households still have no water, Reuters reported.
