Chequers mate: Theresa May ambush routs cabinet Brexiteers

Could Brexit talks be extended if there's no divorce deal? We will see says Austria's Kurz

The Prime Minister's inner circle is trying to secure support for the proposals to create a new UK-EU free trade area for goods, with a "common rulebook".

Speaking ahead of the Eastern Partnership summit, Mrs May said: "The summit here today is all about taking stock and about looking ahead to see how we can tackle the shared challenges together, both in security and development".

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street in London, bound for the House of Commons to face Prime Minister's Questions, Wednesday July 4, 2018.

Boris Johnson declared Theresa May's Brexit plan "a big turd" after the cabinet's crunch talks at Chequers on Friday. Mr Davis had disagreed with the PM's plans for keeping European Union rules for goods and adopting a close customs partnership with the other 27 member countries.

There had been talk of resignations over the plan by ministers who want a clean break with the bloc, such as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

"The EU has always said that once Britain softens its red lines. that they would also show some generosity and flexibility but I think there will be limitations to that flexibility".

Under details of the meeting at Chequers, a 16th century home in Buckinghamshire used as the British PM's official country retreat, the ministers were expected to hand over all their smartphones and devices to ensure complete focus on thrashing out an agreement and also to prevent any leaks from the crucial meeting.

European peace activists march against Trump's NATO visit
He is due to arrive in Helsinki the evening of July 15 for meetings the next morning with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. Other than with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump has no other bilateral meetings now scheduled.

Meanwhile, pro-EU Labour politician Chuka Umunna described it as "yet another behind-closed-doors stitch up that would leave us all worse off".

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said he was looking forward to the publication of the white paper and the EU would consider whether the proposals are "workable and realistic".

The Prime Minister was then quick to be the first to get out her version of what had been agreed by giving an interview to the BBC's political editor who had been waiting all day.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of the influential European Research Group of pro-Brexit Conservatives, said he was concerned when the details are revealed the plan could be a "punishment Brexit".

Efforts to build support for the plan will see MPs invited to attend presentations organised by Chief Whip Julian Smith and Mrs May's chief of staff Gavin Barwell.

There would be "a complete end to freedom of movement", the "supremacy of British courts" would be restored, no more "vast sums of money" would be sent to Brussels.

"We are faced with becoming a vassal state of the European Union, they have us exactly where they want us - unable to compete, taking enormous quantities of their products at inflated prices, protected from global competition by the fortress Europe tariff and regulatory wall and impeded from doing trade deals around the globe", added Longworth.

Johnson robustly opposed PM's Brexit plan
He is said to have warned colleagues it could be a "serious inhibitor to free trade" and striking deals with other countries. He said: "We may be on a journey, it may not be a journey however that Theresa May is capable of taking, given her party".

"A very soft Brexit means that we haven't left, we are simply a rule-taker", he said.

Commentators said alignment on goods could reduce the UK's flexibility to strike trade deals with other countries, particularly the U.S. which would want an agreement allowing its farm products, produced to different standards, into the British market.

He stressed that the European Court of Justice's "remit in the United Kingdom will end when we leave" but "of course there will be a degree of looking from one group of judges to another".

'Critically 80% of our economy will be outside the European Union orbit but his deal also delivers for the part of the economy which has integrated supply chains with Europe'.

Andrea Jenkyns, an MP who quit a government post over Brexit, said it was "fantastic news".

Several MPs expressed their anger about how the ministers had all signed up to the Prime Minister's proposal on Friday, despite voicing their concerns.
