Donald Trump names Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court

Just moments ago, President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

President Trump is expected to announce his pick to replace Justice Kennedy tomorrow; Gabby Morrongiello of the Washington Examiner and Garrett Tenney have more.

"Throughout legal circles, he is considered a judge's judge, a true thought leader among his peers", Trump said Monday night as he introduced Kavanaugh at the White House.

The feminist group blasted out a statement shortly after Mr. Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh, saying him confimation would "further erode protections for nearly every marginalized group in America". Kavanaugh's many written opinions provide insight into his thinking and also will be fodder for Senate Democrats who will seek to block his confirmation.

Schumer said he was confident that the Democratic party can "prove to the American people, which I believe is truly the case, that this nominee will lead to a court that repeals women's reproductive freedom, repeals ACA with its protections for pre-existing conditions, we'll get a majority of the Senate to vote for it".

If confirmed, he is expected to be a reliable conservative vote who could weaken abortion rights, bolster support for capital punishment and curtail the power of regulatory agencies.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh hasn't made his stance on Roe v. Wade or abortion clear.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style. The judge indicated that on the high court he would faithfully interpret the Constitution as it is written, providing an unsurprising nod to originalism.

Kavanaugh, whose wife and two daughters were with him Monday night, said he was "deeply humbled" by the nomination. Brett's mother Martha Gamble served as a Maryland state Circuit Court Judge from 1995 to 2001.

Recently, he said he wouldn't ask any potential nominees about Roe during interviews. Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line. Those included a number of high-profile cases, including same-sex marriage and upholding a woman's right to an abortion.

Kennedy's departure "leaves the court in a calcified state of a hardened left and right with nobody in that middle position", says Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University constitutional law professor.

Each choice represented a shift to the right compared to Kennedy, who has often cast a swing vote between conservatives and liberals on the nine-member bench.

India justifies Air India changing Taiwan to "Chinese Taipei"
Taiwan expressed disappointment after national carrier Air India changed "Taiwan" into " Chinese Taipei " on its official website. Under its "One China" policy, Beijing considers Taiwan a province and opposes ties between Taipei and other capitals.

Kennedy has always been a swing vote to in favour of abortion rights. It's about what country the United States of America is going to chart as its course in the future on this Supreme Court. Like Trump's first nominee previous year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare. The president has said he wants a nominee who could serve on the high court for decades.
