Ethiopia, Eritrea officially end war

Ethiopia PM asks diaspora to save 'a dollar a day' to support development projects

Abiy stepped from an Ethiopian Airlines plane at the airport in Asmara to be greeted by Isaias, the two men embracing before they strode off along a red carpet.

The greeting between Ethiopia's newly elected reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and neighboring Eritrea's longtime President Isaias Afwerki in Eritrea's capital Asmara has been broadcast live in both countries.

"[The prime minister] is expected to talk with the Eritrean leadership on how to mend fences".

Espousing love between their two countries, the leaders of longtime adversaries Ethiopia and Eritrea agreed Sunday to restore diplomatic relations after almost 20 years and to open the border between their neighbouring Horn of Africa countries.

"The events of these past two days between Ethiopia and Eritrea are like the fall of the Berlin Wall".

EPA's press office sent out biographical information on Wheeler late Friday, but did not respond to interview requests for him. Tom Carper, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, wrote in a letter to Wheeler on Friday.

Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane G. Meskel tweeted photos of the leaders and the cheering crowds as the leaders made their way through the capital, Asmara, in a motorcade.

The visit comes a month after Abiy surprised people by fully accepting a peace deal that ended a two-year border war between the two East African nations that killed tens of thousands.

Abiy's Chief of Staff Fitsum Arega wrote on Twitter that Ethiopia had officially submitted a request to Guterres during his visit to Addis Ababa for the lifting of sanctions against Eritrea, which include an arms embargo as well as asset freeze and travel bans against select individuals. For the first time in two decades, a direct worldwide telephone connection between Ethiopia and Eritrea was also restored.

However, the sides did not make clear whether the most immediate issue - Abiy's pledge to finally implement all terms of a 2000 peace deal with Eritrea - had been addressed. Full-blown fighting had ended by 2000, but their troops have faced off across their disputed frontier ever since.

The trip follows a visit to Addis Ababa by an Eritrean delegation.

Harry Maguire: the remarkable rise of England’s unlikely new hero
"I know loads of fans have come here and some have gone back home, but we are doing this for all of them". England play Sweden in the World Cup quarter-final in Samara at 3pm United Kingdom time on Saturday.

Agencies reported that the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea announced on Sunday they would re-open their embassies, hailing a stunningly swift rapprochement between bitter regional enemies at their first summit since a war two decades ago. He did not identify which port.

Abiy, who took office in April, said during that meeting that Ethiopian Airlines would restart flights to Eritrea for the first time since the war, when the nations who share a common history severed diplomatic relations.

Abiy has also pardoned dissidents, lifted a state of emergency and promised to partly privatise important state-owned firms.

While Ethiopia is Africa's second most populous nation, with more than 100 million people, and one of the world's fastest-growing economies, tiny Eritrea, with five million people, is one of the world's most closed-off nations, ruled by Afwerki since gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after years of rebel warfare.

Eritrea may have seen an opportunity in Abiy's reform agenda, which marks a stark departure from the approach of the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the ethnic Tigrayan party that had dominated Ethiopia's ruling EPRDF coalition since the early 1990s.
