Groundnuts may boost male fertility

Eating nuts regularly could improve sperm health, a study suggests. The study lasted for almost four months (14 weeks), after which the researchers compared the sperm quality of both groups. The results of the research was presented at the 34th Annual Meeting of ESHRE in Barcelona showed that a nuts-rich diet could boost sperm count by nearly 20 percent, the vitality of sperm cells by 5 percent, their mobility by six percent and the shape and size of sperm cells by one percent.

A diet rich in nuts can boost sperm count by 20%.

Although these are statistically significant results from a randomized trial with a high level of scientific evidence, Salas-Huetos emphasized that subjects in the study were all healthy and apparently fertile men following a western-style diet.

The study comes amid a decline in sperm counts across the Western world, linked to pollution, smoking and diet.

About one in seven couples have difficulty getting pregnant and about 40-50% of cases of infertility are attributable to men.

Some of the individuals were assigned to resume their typical western-style diet which did not include nuts, while the others consumed 60 grams of mixed almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts per day.

Results revealed that the men who ate the nuts in their diet had improved sperm count (improved by 16 percent), motility (by 6 percent), shape or morphology (by 1 percent), vitality (by 4 percent) as well as reduced DNA fragmentation.

"These four parameters are all associated with male fertility".

He said the subjects in the nut group also showed a "significant reduction" in their levels of sperm DNA fragmentation, a parameter closely associated with male infertility. He warned that results can not be extrapolated to the general population.

But as for whether men should add nuts to their diet if they're trying to have a child, "we can't yet say that", said study co-author Albert Salas-Huetos.

According to Variety , Abrams met with other actresses about the role, but made his decision about Russell earlier this week. Daisy Ridley , Adam Driver , John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are all expected to return for the latest Star Wars installment.

"Evidence is accumulating in the literature that healthy lifestyle changes such as following a healthy dietary pattern might help conception", Salas-Huetos writes.

The research presented by Dr Albert Salas-Huetos from the Human Nutrition Unit of the Rovira i Virgili University in Spain, was based on a trial which examined the changes in sperm over a 98-day period.

It may worry you that much of our mainstream press is increasingly reporting with a strong right-wing bias.

With nobody to hold the rich and powerful to account, or report on the issues that don't fit with the mainstream "narrative", your help is needed.
