Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie Is Officially Happening; Filming Begins This Fall

Variety first reported that Phoenix was in talks to play the Clown Prince of Crime.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the standalone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in NY this September with Phoenix playing Batman's arch-nemesis.

Joaquin isn't the only star set to play the Joker in a new film - Jared Leto will reprise his Suicide Squad role as the villain in a standalone spinoff.

Scott Silver and Todd Phillips have co-written the script that has been described by the studio as "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale". The project's budget will be in the $55 million range, which is significantly lower than most superhero movies and suggests a more risky take on the comic book adaptation a la 20th Century Fox's R-rated Deadpool and Logan.

"I see [a superhero movie] as any other movie", Phoenix continued. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker.

Pictures announced today that Joaquin Phoenix will star in an origin story of one of DC's most notorious Super-Villains, the Joker.

Official plot details are still under wraps but the Joker origin film is to be a gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City, separate from DC's current shared cinematic universe in an effort to create new and unique storylines as the studio expands DC canon.
