Judge: Experts can testify that Roundup linked to cancer

US courts to hear cases that weed-killer sold in UK causes cancer

The ruling from Vince Chhabria, the judge in a USA district court in San Francisco, came after years of litigations on lawsuits claiming that the chemical glyphosate in Monsanto's weed killer spray has caused non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The agrochemical company Monsanto is facing a lawsuit accusing them of having a weed-killing product which causes cancer. "Monsanto's motion for summary judgment is denied". The company faced more than 400 cancer lawsuits in the region and about 5,000 more nationwide.

Chhabria called the plaintiffs' expert opinions "shaky" and entirely excluded the opinions of two scientists.

In a statement, Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge said the company would "continue to defend these lawsuits with robust evidence that proves there is absolutely no connection between glyphosate and cancer".

"The scientific evidence is overwhelming that glyphosate-based products do not cause cancer and did not cause Mr. Johnson's cancer", Lombardi said during his opening statement. Monsanto and related industry groups claim that the link remains unproven.

It's not clear how many (if any) Blockbuster stores have survived outside the U.S. She was shocked to learn that her store will soon be the only one in the country.

The judge wanted to determine whether the science behind the claim that Roundup can cause non-Hodgkin's lymphoma had been properly tested and met other requirements to be considered valid.

The California state judge who handles the most Roundup cases posted to her docket that she was attending the hearings before Chhabria in March. He peppered them with questions about potential strengths and weaknesses of research on the cancer risk of glyphosate.

Chhabria said the evidence, "viewed in its totality, seems too equivocal to support any firm conclusion that glyphosate causes" non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

In his ruling Tuesday, the judge said Ritz and Mucci could both testify before a jury.

The company Monsanto faces 5,000 lawsuits across America as it's alleged that one of their products, Roundup - which is still sold in the United Kingdom - can cause cancer. Farmers in California, the most agriculturally productive state in the USA, use it on more than 200 types of crops. Homeowners, meanwhile, used Monsanto Roundup on their lawns and gardens.

Barcelona sign defender Lenglet from Sevilla
Barcelona say he "completes a spectacular defence" alongside fellow centre-backs Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen. La Blaugrana paid Lenglet's full €35m release clause after failing to negotiate a lower fee for the France global .

In 2015, the World Health Organization, however, classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans.

A flurry of lawsuits against Monsanto in federal and state courts followed, and California added glyphosate to its list of chemicals known to cause cancer.

But later, regulators in the USA and the European Union concluded it was safe.

The judge wrote, "Therefore, the plaintiffs have presented evidence from which a reasonable jury could conclude that glyphosate can cause National Hockey League at human-relevant doses".

However, the company has until now declined to comment on just how close to that threshold it has got. That limit is based on how many deliveries of electric cars an automaker makes in the US.
