Louis Cardinals Fire Manager Mike Matheny

Cardinals Fire Mike Matheny

The Cardinals may have surprised a lot of people late Saturday night by firing Mike Matheny 93 games into his seventh season as manager.

"Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride, and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons", club owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. Matheny was a Gold Glove catcher with the Cardinals from 2000-04 before getting his first managerial job with the club prior to the 2012 season.

Matheny was sacked along with hitting coach John Mabry, and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller. That stretch included a National League Championship in 2013.

Moto E5 Play with Android GO gets expanded release
As mentioned in the beginning, the Android Go version of the E5 Play will launch in Europe and Latin America sometime this month. Android Go smartphones typically feature 8GB of storage at most, though the regular E5 Play includes 16GB of expandable storage.

In the meantime, bench coach Mike Shildt will serve as the interim manager who tries to get things back on track.

During his time in St. Louis, Matheny compiled a 591-473 winning percentage.

The Cardinals plan to hold an 11 a.m. news conference on Sunday to discuss the announcement.

Dead, 12 Hurt After Chemical Plant Explosion
All of the injured remain in hospital in stable condition, and authorities continue to investigate the incident. The reports say the fire continued to burn for about 5 hours and gutted 3 three-story buildings.

So, good for the Cardinals I guess.

But Matheny's hard-ass, old-school managing style has also been heavily questioned, and his comments following Bud Norris' treatment over Jordan Hicks is what likely made the Cardinals' front office decide enough is enough.

Matheny's also received criticism for his bullpen management, poor use of the double-switch, and his failure to motivate players such as Dexter Fowler (whose effort level Mozeliak recently criticized).
