The new feature will help users identify suspicious links shared within the platform

The statement states, "WhatsApp is commissioning a competitive set of awards to researchers interested in exploring issues that are related to misinformation on WhatsApp". The Facebook-owned messaging service has started testing a new feature dubbed Suspicious Link Detection to detect suspicious links being sent through the messenger. If WhatsApp detects anything suspicious, the message will be marked with a red label in order to indicate danger. If the link looks dubious there will be a "Suspicious Link" message added to it.

The app will then highlight the link in red if it deems it to be a potential threat. This will protect users from phishing sites which might try and steal your personal data, such as your logins and passwords. However, the user is free to visit the page if they wish to.
