New Intel Prompts U.S. Government To Reopen Emmett Till Investigation

Justice Dept reopens investigation into Emmett Till’s lynching murder

Two white men - Donham's then-husband, Roy Bryant, and his half brother, J.W. Milam - were charged with murder but acquitted in the slaying of the Chicago teen, who had been staying with relatives in northern MS at the time.

This undated photo shows Emmett Louis Till, a 14-year-old black Chicago boy, who was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in 1955 after he allegedly whistled at a white woman in Mississippi.

Tyson, senior research scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies, published "The Blood of Emmett Till" previous year, shedding new light on the 1955 lynching.

Donham testified on August 24, 1955 that Till grabbed her hand while he was paying for bubble gum at a store that she owned with her husband Roy Bryant. And she said, to be perfectly honest, I don't remember. "But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice".

A judge ruled the testimony inadmissible.

Elsewhere, work crews tried to clear multiple small landslides that coated roads, rendering them virtually impassable. Over 2 lakh households still have no water, Reuters reported .

When she spoke to Tyson in 2008, she acknowledged that it was "not true" that Emmett had grabbed her or made vulgar remarks.

At one point, the men recalled, Emmett told them, "You bastards, I'm not afraid of you".

The Department of Justice has reopened its investigation into the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old whose vicious lynching and the subsequent acquittal of his killers became a flashpoint for the civil-rights movement. A man who came to the door at her residence declined to comment about the FBI reopening the investigation. That's in the blood of Emmett Till.

The Justice Department announced it had received new information about the murder of Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi and is re-investigating the case. It did not elaborate. Although it has not been confirmed by the Justice Department, her confession is most likely the new evidence that was cited when the case was reopened. Weeks later, a grand jury would decline to indict Bryant and Milam on kidnapping charges. His mutilated body was later found tied to a cotton gin with barbed wire in a river.

Later, Roy Bryant and Milam told a magazine how they killed Emmett and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie, but because of double jeopardy laws, they couldn't be tried again. "Can't you take it?" she recalled his saying.

Despite the pleas of his MS family, Roy Bryant and Milam reportedly forced Emmett into their waiting vehicle and drove him down to the Tallahatchie River, where they reportedly forced the teen to carry a 75-pound cotton gin fan.

Till's cousin, Wheeler Parker, said Thursday he's "pretty sure" an investigator asked him about what happened in a MS store the day Till whistled at a white woman before his slaying in 1955. The manuscript is being kept at the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill library.

Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, was horrified to see the state of her son's body when it was returned to her.

After Look Magazine published Bryant and Milam's confession, the two were rejected by friends and supporters around the country. She wanted "all the world" to see what she saw, how her boy had been maimed beyond recognition.
