North Atlantic Treaty Organisation turns its focus on Afghanistan after Trump's harsh criticism day before

Trump Tariffs and NATO Pressure Bend Risk Trends Dollar Rally Comes with Questions

Trump's first day of meetings with leaders of the military alliance was contentious, with Trump demanding nations spend far more on defense and accusing Germany of being "totally controlled" by Russian Federation because of a pipeline project.

"NATO is much stronger now than it was two days ago", Trump told reporters, describing an unscheduled crisis meeting of the 29 alliance leaders on Thursday morning as "fantastic" and having "a great collegial spirit".

During the summit, Trump reportedly broke diplomatic protocol by calling German Chancellor Angela Merkel by her first name, saying "Angela, you need to do something about this", a source told Reuters.

The tone of their remarks contrasted with an earlier breakfast between Trump and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief Jens Stoltenberg, when the Republican president said Germany's reliance on Russian energy left it "in the control" of Moscow and Merkel later referred to her youth in Soviet-run East Germany to insist Berlin was now fully sovereign.

"We will see what happens - just a loose meeting".

"We call upon [North Korea] to fully implement its global obligations; to eliminate its nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities and ballistic missiles, and abandon all related programmes", the statement said.

Theresa May hopes Donald Trump visit will boost US-UK links
While the many thousands are expected to line the streets and protest against Trump, politicians have become involved too. After the visit , Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.

The US leader has also singled out Germany for particular criticism over its defence spending.

Asked about Trump's suggestion, Stoltenberg said he'll focus on what's been agreed to.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, left, talks to U.S. President Donald Trump as British Prime Minister Theresa May, right watches at the opening ceremony of the NATO summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Two NATO sources said, however, that Trump had not issued a threat to pull the United States out of the alliance that it helped found to keep the peace in Europe after World War Two.

The pair later met for a one-on-one meeting and while Trump insisted they had a "very very good relationship", their frosty body language suggested otherwise.

Trump says at a news conference Thursday in Brussels that he told "people" that he would be "very unhappy" if they didn't increase their commitments.

3rd mission underway at Thai cave, aims to rescue all left
The rescuers have been learning from experience and were two hours faster in bringing the second batch of survivors out on Monday. A person with knowledge of the rescue said just before the eleventh person was spotted, that 10 people had been brought out.

Mr Trump said countries needed to "step up, not over a 10-year period, they have to step up immediately" adding that other USA presidents had raised the issue but "did not do anything about it". "NATO has not treated us fairly, but I think we'll work something out".

Trump's biggest target for criticism, Germany, predicts that it will be spending 1.5 per cent of GDP on its military budget by 2024.

A USA conservative political commentator suggested that perhaps Trump was looking in the direction of the United States, while his counterparts were looking at Europe. Trump said "actual" USA military spending is 4.2 percent of GDP, without explaining the big discrepancy.

Amid the tumult, British Prime Minister Theresa May sounded a call for solidarity among the allies, saying, "As we engage Russian Federation we must do so from a position of unity and strength - holding out hope for a better future, but also clear and unwavering on where Russian Federation needs to change its behaviour for this to become a reality".

Trump's demand jolted the transatlantic alliance at the conclusion of this week's Brussels summit and, in the words of one diplomat briefed on the events, sent "everyone into a tailspin".
