CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

At least 212 people in four Midwest states have been sickened as of Monday by a parasite found in plastic vegetable trays sold under the Del Monte brand.

Those trays - which included broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and dill dip - also were available in IN at Kwik Trip/Kwik Star locations. Seven victims have been hospitalized, according to the CDC. Health officials say it can take up to a week to develop symptoms, which can include diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, cramping, bloating, increased gas, fatigue and low-grade fever.

Cyclospora cayetanensis, the CDC noted, is a "single-celled parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis". Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another. "The recalled products were distributed to: Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, Food Max Supermarket and Peapod in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin", according to the FDA recall. If not treated, these symptoms may last up to a month or longer.

The FDA has not yet identified ingredients linked to the outbreak, saying only that each component is under investigation. If you have any of the vegetable trays in your home do not eat them and throw them away. The FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays, as well, in its ongoing investigation.
